Seafaring Women is a broadsheet newspaper on the subject of female sailors, and is part of the project The Hidden Things in Plain Sight: Female Sailors and Stowaways conceived by Anastasia Palamarchuk & Rebecca Sittler, that looks at gender roles and the stigma of being female in a male dominated society.
Seafaring Women features content sourced from 19th/20th century ship logs and news articles that detail accounts of women posing as male sailors, complete with descriptions of their ‘stereotypical behaviour’ and situations in which their true gender was shockingly revealed.
Featuring a folded construction, the reader is able to open the publication, in turn revealing the identities of the hidden women within.
